We would love to do another home tour in 2015

Originally a Homes Tour, coordinated so successfully by former PPA Member Susie Windham,  the tour is typically the largest tour that the PPA organizes.  This year, our new Vintage Tour 'Our Favorite Places' will showcase not only homes throughout town but very significant properties with a special story and history. We expect hundreds of guests to tour these gems of our town.

PROPERTY RESEARCH
These volunteers assist in researching the home's history, working with the property owner and other resources, and help prepare the script for the docents to use during the tour as well as for the informational brochure that will be given to guests with their admission ticket.

VOLUNTEER DOCENTS
Tour docents work a roughly two-hour shift in one area of the properties designated by the chair.  The exact length of the shift depends on the number of docents working in a home.  Docents will receive a 'fact sheet' of the property with details.  Docents also ensure that the property is respected and returned to the owner in the condition it was entrusted to us.  For those able to stay most of the day, we plan to move docents around so that they are not at the same site all day, making it far more interesting!

Other volunteer opportunities include:

    * Selling tickets at two kiosks
    * Setting up signage in the morning;
    * Preparing property for the tour in the morning;
   *  Closing property down, cleaning up signage and the tour ticket kiosks at the end of the day;

Produced by the PPA, this special oral history film is available at the Town Hall as well as by mail.   Many thanks to townspeople who shared their stories with the us.

DVDs are now available by mailing our REQUEST FORM with a check made payable to "PPA" in the amount of $20 ($15 plus $5 shipping/processing for each DVD) to:

A summary of the PPA's most recent publication "PURCELLVILLE" ...

Many have said that Purcellville should be a national park considering there are so many remaining structures from the turn of the century and earlier that tell the story of how this town has worked.  From the days of its earliest known settlement in 1740 when Lord Fairfax was deeded land ...

Images of America: Purcellville (Arcadia Publishing) offers a unique and memorable view of this historically rich town of Virginia.  In cooperation with the Purcellville Preservation Association, author Meredith Thomas has collected over 200 archival images that recall the faces and places that have defined the town for the past 150 years.

The Images of America series celebrates the history of neighborhoods, towns, and cities across the country.  Using archival photographs, each title presents the distinctive stories from the past that shape the character of the community today.  Arcadia is proud to play a part in the preservation of location heritage, making history available to all.
